A small fridge makes sense when you live alone or as a couple in a rented room or flat, cook a few times a week and move house every year or two. Will it fit your room?

In a rented room, the fridge often goes next to the bed, under a window or in a corner of a shared kitchen, so the height matters as much as the width.

Going by the listing figures, the 140 L is the shorter of the two, roughly waist to chest height, so it can sit under a window or beside a table. Its recessed handle does not stick out, which helps in a narrow passage, and the hidden condenser at the back means it can stand closer to the wall than an old-style fridge with coils on the back. The 170 L is taller and a little wider.

One honest warning: the size figures on these two listings are labelled in millimetres, but the numbers only make sense as centimetres, so we do not quote them here. If your space is tight, send us the measurements on WhatsApp and we will check the real size of the model before you order. Leave a small gap at the sides and back either way, so the fridge can release heat.

What 140 litres actually holds

For one person, 140 litres is enough for:

milk, curd and eggs for the week;
two or three days of cooked food in containers;
a few days of vegetables;
ice trays and a small amount of frozen food in the freezer box.

What it will not do well is hold a full weekly vegetable shop for two, big pots of food, or a festival's worth of sweets and meat. The dedicated chiller zone on the 140 L is useful for keeping milk and drinks extra cold.

When the 170 L is worth NPR 6,500 more

Pay the difference if any of these apply:

you cook at home most days and buy vegetables once a week;
there are two of you and you both keep food in it;
your area still has long power cuts. The 170 L listing gives 12+ hours of cooling retention; the 140 L listing does not give a figure;
you plan to stay in the same place for a few years, so moving it often is not a concern.

If none of these apply, the 140 L does the job and the money is better kept.

Shared flats, locks and moving house

The 140 L has a built-in lock and key, which matters in a shared flat or a hostel where several people use one kitchen. The 170 L listing does not mention a lock.

Renters move often, and fridges are easily damaged in a move:

carry the fridge upright, and never lay it flat on its back in a pickup or taxi;
after the move, let it stand upright for a few hours before you switch it on, so the compressor oil settles;
tape the door shut and remove the glass shelves before carrying it down a staircase.

A smaller, lighter fridge is simply easier to get through narrow stairs, which is a real advantage for the 140 L.

Power cuts and running cost

Neither listing gives a yearly electricity figure, so we cannot quote one. Both are small direct cool fridges, which are among the cheapest appliances in a home to run. As a guide, our larger 240 L double door model lists 145 units a year; at NEA household rates of roughly NPR 3 to NPR 11 per unit, that is about NPR 435 to NPR 1,595 a year, and a small single door fridge should not use more. If you share a meter with your landlord, that is useful to know when splitting the bill.

During a power cut, keep the door closed. Direct cool fridges build up some ice in the freezer box, so defrost it when the layer gets thick.

Mini fridge or 140 L: compare the price

Many people looking for a small fridge expect a mini fridge to be much cheaper. For price context, fridges under 80 litres listed online in Nepal mostly cost around NPR 16,200 to NPR 17,900 (8 listings checked on 6 October 2026), and 80 to 150 litre fridges mostly cost around NPR 16,700 to NPR 17,900 (10 listings, 1 to 6 October 2026).

So a much smaller fridge costs nearly as much as a 140 L one.
